easy as pie quilt

Well, here it is, the end of March already. Can you believe it? That means I have another stash pattern to share today. I'm calling it Easy as Pie. I love the vintage vibe it has.
It measures 58" x 70".

This was my initial fabric pull. I started with about 18 different fabrics, and edited a few out as I went (due to color), and added in a few more. So I would guess there are about 20+ different fabrics in all.
Materials needed:

3 1/4 yards total of various fabrics for the rectangles
1/2 yard for binding
3 1/2 yards backing fabric
60'' x 72'' batting or larger

Cutting:

cut 110 rectangles 5 1/2" x 7 1/2" from various fabrics
cut 10 rectangles 3" x 7 1/2" from various fabrics (these will be referred to as half rectangles)

Assembly:

There are two approaches to the assembly.

The first way is to layout all the blocks at once, making sure that each block is in a specific spot.

The second way is to randomly sew rectangles together to make the rows. Once all the rows are sewn together, they are arranged. This is a much more random approach, but somehow it always seems to work out in the end-especially if you have a large variety of fabrics.

Either way, the rows will be constructed the same way.

Sew 11 rectangles together, side by side. You will be sewing the 7 1/2" sides together, so the rectangles will be standing on end. Add a half rectangle to each row. Make 10 rows.
In every other row, the half rectangle will be the starting block.
In the alternating rows, the half rectangle will be the ending block.

Sew all 10 rows together, making sure to press the seams well. Quilt, baste and bind as desired.

If you use this pattern to decrease your stash, I'd love to see it!

Your quilt is really pretty. My husband asked me this morning what I was sewing and I said another quilt. I told him that I was going to use up my stash before buying anything new and something I want is coming out in May.

  11. So which way did you do the assembly--totally random or by laying out each block? I'm guessing the former but I'm curious.

  13. What a nice way to decrease your fabric stash! Thanks for taking the time to share with us the pattern for recreating the quilt.

  14. This may be a really dumb question... but how do you cut WOF strips over 6" wide? I have a 6" by 24" ruler but whenever I have to cut wider than 6" it never comes out straight. Is there a long ruler out there that is wider than 6"?
(I realize that you probably cut your strips 5.5" wide and trimmed at 7.5 intervals.) I was just wondering if you had some magic trick...

  27. I haven't made a lot of pies, so this looks easier than pie! Love it. I especially love that offset look so I don't have to worry about lining up the seams of each row. Cool color combo too.

I love what you have done with this stash pile. Would this be ok for someone who is a bit OCD to do or will the need to be perfect drive them crazy? I would love to use up my stash because I really want to buy more fabric.

  52. I love this. (Esp because those are the colors/fabrics that scream my name.) This makes me want to pull out fabric and make a quilt tonight. I could just let the family forage for their own food. I won't but it sounds so tempting.

You always inspire me. Thanks for the effort you take to do that.

I am new quilter, and have been looking for a quilt to make for my queen size bed. After finding this on pinterest, I fell in love! But, being so new, I am unsure if this is big enough for a queen. Can you help?

  61. Bingo! That's just what I want. TBH I'm not really good at matching seams, and in this one that's not necessary. I'm all over it! I promised a friend a scrappy quilt from a bag of furnishing/curtain fabric bits, looks like this is going to be the one! You just saved my reason--no matching here!
